Coming of Age – Cruisin’ to the Bahamas
The end of Senior year was a blast. I had finalized my plans for college so I was able to spend the rest of the year enjoying myself (and maintaining my grades of course). The highlight of the end of that year was our Senior cruise to the Bahamas. It was my first cruise, my first trip to a Caribbean island and it would also be my first time experiencing alcohol.
(Just in case you are wondering, this is not where my ‘Coming of Age’ story gets all dramatic and I start telling you about my fall into alcoholism. Sorry to disappoint, but that just isn’t part of my story :-))
The legal drinking age in the Bahamas was eighteen. I wouldn’t turn eighteen until later that summer, but somehow I was able to get my hands on one or two (well, maybe four) strawberry daiquiris during the cruise. One night in particular was quite eventful. My friends and I were hanging out after dinner at one of the cruise ship bars. I looked up and saw this tall older man who looked a lot like Dr. Humphries (president of FAMU) across the room. At first I wasn’t sure if it was the slight motion sickness I was feeling from the ship or the one or two (well, maybe three) daiquiris I had, but after a few minutes of staring I realized it was in fact him. Now, what are the chances that I would run into the president of the university that I had planned to attend on my Senior cruise to the Bahamas? I know, crazy huh?
With Anthony’s (high school beau) encouragement, I worked up the nerve to go over to Dr. Humphries and introduce myself and let him know that I would be attending his school in the Fall. I was a bit concerned that he was able to tell that I had been drinking, but looking back on it (and after getting to know a little more about him once I got to FAMU), I’m guessing that he had consumed a few daiquiris himself.
