Writing a book has been on my bucket list for many years. Despite a few half-hearted attempts here and there, I’ve never really made much progress on this endeavor.
That all changes this year. In fact, that will all change within the next few months.
What’s changed, you ask? What make this attempt different from those in the past?
I understand the lack of confidence. I will be the first to admit that I’ve been here before. I’ve been wildly motivated to do something big, only to lose that motivation (and discipline and willpower) to see it through.
All I can say is that this time is different. Maybe it’s my newly found confidence in my ability to develop and stick with good habits (and break some bad ones) – thanks Gretchen Rubin! Maybe it’s the fact that I am back to a traditional 9 to 5 type of job that has me yearning for flexibility with my schedule. Or, maybe it’s all the awesome podcasts interviews of really impressive people I’ve been listening to on my daily commute.
Whatever it is – I’ll take it!
But, I am not taking it for granted. I’m doing a few things to set myself up for success:
- Putting it out there. This post isn’t about creating some buzz around my upcoming book launch. It is actually serving my need to create accountability for myself. If I put it out there, then I can’t hide from it.
- Scheduling writing time first thing in the morning. I’ve been trying to avoid writing first thing in the morning mainly because it would require a pretty early wake-up time (5am – yikes!). The fact is, I am more of a morning person than I am a night person and after a full day of work, kid drop offs/pick ups, and dinner, I just don’t have enough left in the mental tank to sit down and write for an hour.
- Finding an accountability partner. I’m going to find someone to serve as an accountability partner and coach specifically for this project. I think it will be my cousin who lives near me (and also happens to be a writer/editor – WINNING!). The plan is a weekly call where I will share my progress for the past week and what’s on tap for the upcoming week. Now I just need to get that email written to make sure she’s up for it.
I’m very excited about this – wish me luck and pass along any good writing tips you might have!
